It was a good night for Nigeria at Monday’s Confederation of African Football awards ceremony in Marrakesh.
Victor Osimhen was crowned the 2023 African Men’s Footballer of the Year in recognition of his fine performances for the Super Eagles and Napoli.
Compatriot Asisat Oshoala won the African Women’s Footballer of the Year prize for a record-extending sixth time.
Osimhen scored 26 times in 32 appearances last season to fire Napoli to the Serie A title for the first time since 1990. The 24-year-old also scored five goals in four Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches to help Nigeria book a spot at next year’s tournament.
Osimhen’s CAF award comes almost two months after he placed eighth in the men’s Ballon d’Or vote – becoming the first Nigerian to finish in the top 10.
